Mariah Carey’s Butterflies

I am sure that Mariah Carey had butterflies the other night at the Grammy Awards. Her release The Emancipation of Mimi was the best selling album of 2005, but after several years of flops (Glitter, anyone) I bet she was nervous. Even with all of the pre-Grammy hype about Mariah, she didn’t win any televised awards. She did mangage to win three awards including one for Best Contemporary R&B Album. It was a pretty good comeback for the song bird. After all of her breakdowns, breakups, and breakouts, I am surprised that she’s back near the top.

In the liner notes for Emancipation, Mariah says that the idea of the album is to free someone from “restrictions or conventions”. I can’t think of a better way to represent this idea than Mariah’s signature symbol – the butterfly.

It seems to me that anything that helped lift Mariah out of her rough spots and back up the charts is worth a try. I bet that girl has the biggest industrial sized butterfly swing in her backyard. Must. Get. Note. Higher!!! Her eyeshadow is probably made from sweet innocent butterfly wings ground down into a powder – never mind all of that body glitter. Her pantyhose is probably woven from the silk of some caterpillar that turns into a huge butterfly. I mean, stars do crazy stuff like that and Mariah is no stranger to crazy.
