I went to see Iron Man the other day, and something strange happened: I enjoyed Gwyneth Paltrow’s performance. Didn’t see that one coming. Usually, her performances have kind of a gawky, awkward – gawkward, if you will – aspect to them, but not here. This is by far her best work since The Royal Tenenbaums, so I guess she’ll be typecast as an incestuous agoraphobe with one finger / supercompetent secretary to a superhero. It’s already a way bigger range than Lindsay “I Know Who Bored Me” Lohan.
Whatever you say about Gwyneth Paltrow’s acting, or tendency to name her children after fruit heavy with religious symbolism (she has a daughter named “Apple,” whom I assume will be followed by, Adam, Eve, God, Archangel and Serpent) she is a beautiful lady, and one who wears clothes well. That’s why I selected this photograph of her: she’s usually so put-together and photogenic that this picture is especially funny. She looks like a dancer in the video for a song called “Heartburn in a Windstorm.” Despite the weather and her terrible acid reflux, she is very flatteringly dressed…except for her pendant, which looks lost. Everything matches well and is suitable except for that pendant, which is hanging out with her navel. This is a fine look if you tell fortunes at a health food store in Sacramento, but this is not a look for a movie star.
